Topic: The Problems of Translation and Translators in Turkey
In the beginning of the presentation, Meryem talked about translator. When I write the translator on Google, it shows the pictures of translation machine rather than people. We talked about the role of translator in Turkey. She asked our ideas about the translators in Turkey and whether we have a chance to observe a translator or not.
I thought that being a translator was an easy job but now I have different ideas. I know the difficulties of being a translator. She stated that translation reflects the feeling of the text. Thus; knowing the language is not enough to translate. Translator needs knowledge in terms of the text, linguistic, strong language, culture, history, and geography. In my opinion, being aware of every grammar rules does not bring the perfect translation.
Being a translator in Turkey is hard and as I realized no one cares who translate the books. Also, Meryem told the rate of pirate books.

This presentation starts with Italian proverb. “Cevirmen haindir.” Firstly, in this presentation, we discussed the criteria of a good film. Who will decide what is good and what is bad? People have different perspectives and according to their perspectives, the criteria changes. It depends on people. Then, Selma asked a question: ‘Are there any good translator or bad translator? How do you decide?’ Then, she stated that there is no good or bad people but it is clear that there is good and bad behaviors. In our culture, we have an idiom. There is no ugly women but neglected. For me, there is no bad translator but there is translator who ignores his/her job.
While we are translating some sentences or words, we can make a mistake. In this presentation, Selma showed strange translation for a student from prep school. Because of this, the translator should adopt two cultures.
